What is a DPF?

A diesel particulate filter (DPF) is an emissions control device fitted to all modern diesel vehicles. It traps soot particles from the exhaust and stores them inside the filter. When full, the vehicle's engine control unit (ECU) triggers a regeneration cycle - a hot burn that incinerates the trapped soot and clears the filter.

This system works well on long motorway journeys where the engine reaches high temperatures. Problems arise when drivers do lots of short urban trips. The filter never gets hot enough to regenerate, so soot builds up faster than it's burned.

Why Does DPF Clogging Happen?

Modern diesel engines are over-fueled by the manufacturer. The ECU injects excess fuel to trigger hot regeneration burns, which works fine on the motorway. But in city driving, excess fuel washes down into the sump, diluting your engine oil. This creates two problems:

  1. Excessive soot production - Over-fueling generates more soot than a standard remap would
  2. Poor oil condition - Fuel dilution destroys oil properties, damaging pistons, rings, and bearings

This is why some owners get repeated DPF failures even after cleaning. The ECU is still over-fueling.

The difference is that regeneration happens less frequently and more efficiently, meaning a healthier filter and cleaner engine oil.

What About Warranty and MOT?

Warranty: Manufacturer warranty may be affected by ECU modifications. Check your policy. We recommend informing your insurer before remapping.

MOT: Your vehicle must still pass emissions testing. A properly optimised remap maintains compliance. Failed DPF regeneration can cause MOT failure; a remap prevents that.
